Fave dei Morti, or beans of the dead biscuits, are prepared during the time of year when you commemorate the dead (around november), from which their name derives. These ultra-delicate almond paste biscuits are shaped like large beans. Their preparation is tied to an age-old tradition. Beans are often used in rituals related to the dead since it is believed that the white and black colour of the bean is symbolically related to the concept of mystery. In ancient times, during funeral rites, beans were scattered on the coffin and slaves left a trail of beans behind them. They were also offered to the gods of Pluto and Prosperine.
