Discovering Bettona
Wonderful town located in the heart of Umbria, it is a village of Etruscan origins and typically medieval layout.
The dated roots also resonate in the name itself, in fact it seems that Bettona means “the Country of the Ancients”.
Thanks to the position perched on a hill crowned with olive trees, Bettona offers the visitor an enchanting glance that goes from Perugia to Assisi and also passing through Spello. All surrounded by a splendid and luxuriant vegetation. It is not only the fantastic panorama that makes the visitor fall in love.
Bettona is part of the precious circuit “The most beautiful villages in Italy”, thanks also to its valuable and rich historic center.
Pleasant walks can in fact be taken within the town and there are points of a certain historical and artistic interest, starting with the medieval walls, which have incorporated some sectors of previous Etruscan walls.
The Municipal Art Gallery in the Palazzetto del Podestà is valuable, dating back to 1371, where two paintings by Pietro Perugino and other works by Jacopo Siculo, Dono Doni, Fiorenzo di Lorenzo and Della Robbia are exhibited.
During the walk through the alleys of Bettona it will be possible to visit the parish church of Santa Maria Maggiore, built in the XIII century. The interior houses a banner by Perugino and a standard by Niccolò Alunno. Also worth visiting are the 8th century Church of San Crispolto, built by some monks to preserve the remains of the patron saint and the Oratory of Sant’Andrea, where you can admire frescoes from 1394 by the school of Giotto.
In Bettona every year there is a rich program of events. On 11 and 12 May the feast of the patron saint San Crispolto is celebrated, in June and July the “Bettona sotto le Stelle” is organized (an event full of cultural, musical, theater and dance events), while during the last week in July the Goose Festival is celebrated. In September it is time for the “Sagra Musicale Umbra” with classical music concerts at the Church of San Crispolto.
Furthermore, Bettona stands out for its typical products such as Torta al Testo and roasted goose, as well as being a land of fine wines and typical oils with which to delight after visiting the village.
